Fenty Beauty Match Stix by the Dozen Reviews & Swatches
Holiday 2018
Fenty Beauty Holiday 2018 Match Stix by the Dozen ($129.00 for 1.20 oz.) contains 12 miniature-sized Match Stix with five shades from the permanent line and seven new shades. I reached out to the brand multiple times trying to find out whether the new shades were going to be added to the permanent range in the future or if they were limited edition and exclusive to the set, but I wasn’t able to get an answer. The packaging for the set was similar to the Mattemoiselle 10/10 set (which I was able to get confirmation about; those new shades will be added in the future) and not the limited edition, holiday sets, so here’s hoping they will be added in the future. The formula was consistent with the permanent range–medium to full coverage, fairly blendable, a drier, more powder-like finish on the skin. Some shades were drier, sheerer, or harder to blend out, which was how the permanent range was for me as well.
Each Match Stix contains 0.10 oz. of product, and a full-sized Match Stix contains 0.25 oz. and retails for $25.00 or $100.00 per ounce, which gives the set a total value of $120. It includes a roll-up case that they can be stored in. Worth nothing, the miniature Match Stix are not magnetic, whereas the full-sized ones click together for easy hunting in one’s bag (per the brand at launch).
Blonde
Blonde is a bright, light-medium gold with strong, warm yellow undertones and a soft, pearly sheen. It had nearly opaque pigmentation with a fairly smooth, blendable texture that was a touch creamy in the tube but felt more like a powder on my skin. I was able to apply and blend it out gently using my fingertips for quick, easy application, but I found the finish did emphasize my skin’s natural a touch. It stayed on nicely for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Formula Overview
$25.00/0.25 oz. – $100.00 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to be long-wearing with a “light-as-air,” “blendable” texture that “lives to be layered.” They twist-up and are medium-sized with a domed edge. I found that applying to my fingertips worked better than direct application, as it enabled me greater control over coverage level as well as placement, and if you tend to apply over foundation, then this will help keep the Match Stix cleaner, too.
The texture was thin, and it did seem to go from a “cream” in the tube to a more powder-like product once on the skin. They were fairly blendable with a few being more sparkly with less visible base color, which may not be for everyone, and others had a more pearl-like sheen that didn’t emphasize my skin’s natural texture. Most shades applied and blended out without lifting up foundation or pulling into pores (over bare skin), but the ones that did tended to have larger particles in them. They lasted between six and eight hours on me.
A problem I had throughout just swatching each shade on my cheeks for photos was that whatever was exposed was a bit dry, more powdery to the touch, and I felt like I had to really warm the product up and/or swipe it back and forth on the back of my hand to refresh the texture. This is not uncommon with drier, cream-based formulas, but it’s still a downside and an area that could be improved upon. Some shades were very pigmented, others were medium and buildable, and a couple were sheerer.

Starstruck
Starstruck is a pale pink with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had nearly opaque color payoff in a single layer, when applied directly from the tube, with a lightly creamy consistency that was thin and quick to feel like a powder on my skin. I used my fingertips to pat the color onto my skin and gently diffuse the edges, which worked, but it could have been a bit more emollient for easier application. It wore well on my skin for eight hours.

Champagne Heist
Champagne Heist is a soft copper with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation when applied directly from the tube. The cream-to-powder formula had barely enough creaminess to feel like a cream product, and it looked and felt more like a powder as soon as I put it on my cheeks as it dried down quickly. I was able to diffuse and blend out the edges of it once it dried, though, so it wasn’t unforgiving. It lasted well for eight hours on me before it started to wear away.

Platinum Pearl
Platinum Pearl is a soft pewter with subtle, warmer gold pearl shimmer. It had semi-sheer coverage, which was buildable to medium coverage when two to three layers. It had a drier texture, even in the tube, that made it harder to apply evenly and less blendable. This particular shade was decent over bare skin but lifted up foundation quite a bit, and I did not find a way to make it workable over foundation. On me, it lasted for six and a half hours.

Confetti
Confetti is a pale, lavender base with flecks of lavender and blue sparkle. It had medium coverage and was more emollient than the pemranent version I have, which seemed to help it yield more pigmentation as well. There was visible sparkle on my skin, so if you’re not someone who likes a glittery highlight, this one might not be your cup of tea. I felt like the sparkles did not adhere as evenly as I would have liked, and I also found most of them did not translate onto my skin if I used my fingertips to apply. It wore well for six and a half hours but the sparkle traveled across my skin while worn.

Pink Lemonade
Pink Lemonade is a medium-dark, cooler pink base with warmer, golden pearl shimmer. It had good color coverage that was buildable to full coverage with less than half of a layer on top, at least when applied directly from the tube. It had more buildable coverage if I used my fingertips to pick up and apply color. The texture was lightweight, thin, and more velvety than cream-like (less “wet” in feeling), so I found it took a bit more effort to even out and diffuse the edges. It lasted well for seven and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Yacht Life
Yacht Life is a medium, pink-coral with a golden shimmer finish. It had opaque color payoff that applied fairly evenly to bare skin, but the consistency could have been just a bit creamier (the permanent version I have was creamier), which would have made it easier to apply and diffuse on my skin, particularly over a base. It stayed on well for eight hours on me before it started to fade noticeably.

Ridiiic
Ridiiic is a bright orange-red with warm, golden pearl. The color payoff was opaque in one layer, when applied directly from the tube, but it could be applied more gradually with fingertips or a brush. The texture was lightly creamy, smooth, and blendable on my skin and yielded a dewy finish (even though it set like a powder). It wore well for nine hours on me before fading a bit.

Hibiscus
Hibiscus is a rich, deep pink-coral with warm undertones and flecks of gold sparkle. It had rich pigmentation in a single layer, when applied directly from the tube, but it could be applied with more medium, buildable coverage if dabbed on or gently applied with fingertips if preferred. The consistency was lightly creamy–enough to help it apply initially–and quickly dried to a powder-like finish after coming into contact with my skin. This shade blended out fairly easily when I used my fingertips, and it lasted nicely for almost nine hours on my skin.

Beach Bum
Beach Bum is a medium, reddish-coral with warm undertones and a fine, golden pearl sheen. It had opaque pigmentation when applied directly to my arm with the tube, but it had more buildable coverage when applied with fingertips or patted onto the skin. I would consider it a more pigmented product than a sheer or buildable one, though. The texture was just barely creamy in the tube and felt more like a powder when it came into contact with my skin. I patted it onto my cheeks and gently diffused the edges with my fingertips, which yielded an even application and a soft, luminous finish that didn’t emphasize my skin’s natural texture. It stayed on nicely for eight hours on me before it started to fade.

Bordeaux Brat
Bordeaux Brat is a rich, medium-dark plum with subtle, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The pigmentation was opaque when applied directly from the tube (in a stroke), though if dabbed/patted on or applied with fingertips, it could be applied more sheerly if preferred. The consistency had slight slip but was thin and felt more like a powder once the product came into contact with my skin. I was impressed by how well this applied, blended, and diffused along the edges as deeper shades like this can often look like they’re sinking into my skin in splotches but this did not. It lasted well for nine hours on me before I noticed slight fading.

Cognac
Cognac is a deep brown with subtle, warm undertones and a soft, pearly sheen. It had rich color coverage that applied that way when used directly from the tube, but when I used my fingertips to apply and distribute product, it was more about how much I transferred onto my fingertip so I had more control over the coverage. The texture was thin, lightly emollient but not overly creamy or “wet” in feel, especially as it seemed to start turning into more of a powder-like finish as soon as I applied it to my cheeks. This shade blended out fairly evenly, but it did not look as seamless over my skin as most of the other shades. It wore well for eight hours on me before it started to fade noticeably.
